Timing is everything!

But when the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, in order to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as children.
Galatians 4:4-5 NRSV

"Mmmm-what's that smell?" I asked when I visited my family on Thanksgiving day. There is nothing like the smell of a turkey baking in the oven. For hours my mouth watered, and I daydreamed about how that delicious meal would taste. I couldn't wait to take that turkey out of the oven! But Aunt Carol told me, "It's just not time yet!" If we had eaten dinner that day when I was hungry, we would have had an inedible mess. Turkeys just have to bake for the full amount of time. Timing is everything! No matter how hungry you are, you have to wait until the time is right. Only then can you enjoy the benefits of a meal well cooked.

"On no, what's that smell?" I cried as I dashed to pull the cookie sheet out of the oven. There is nothing like the smell of burnt chocolate chip cookies...and the disappointment that follows. I was sure I had set my oven timer. After all, timing is everything! Just a few extra minutes, and the cookies are too hard and black to eat. You have to take the cookies out of the oven at just the right time. Then you can enjoy the hard work you put into baking them. I might not always have great timing in the kitchen, but God's timing is always perfect.

As a matter of fact, Jesus' work on earth was timed perfectly...He came at precisely the right time in history. He spent thirty years preparing for His ministry. Then, when the time was right, Jesus leaped into action. He healed the sick, fed the hungry, and nurtured the disciples. Jesus didn't rush into His ministry like I rushed the turkey dinner. Nor did he wait too long to give up His life like I waited to take the cookies out of the oven. When the hour was right, Christ died on the cross. Then the world waited for three days. Not two, not one, but three, just as God planned. And boy, did He have something cooking! Christ's glorious resurrection was undoubtedly something worth waiting for! And so is His wondrous second coming.

There will always be burnt cookies and underdone turkey because my timing just isn't quite right. But God's timing is always right on. Jesus' second coming will be as perfectly timed as the first. Will you be ready?
